Dr Gurusamy Mudaliar

Dr.M.R.Guruswamy Mudaliar was born on 7 ' November 1880.

He completed his MBBS from Madras Medical College with First class & High Rank.

He was awarded Chipperfield Gold Medal in Surgery. He obtained special training at Deradhun for Radiology.

He joined the Madras Presidency in the Medical department.

He held the post ofADMO which was considered as a high rank for Indian Doctors during theBritish rule.

He was among the first in 1920 to have passed MDI General Medicine.

He was the Indian Editor for theMedical Book "Materia Medica" for which he was honoured as Father of Medicine.
During theBritish Rule he was sent to London to study the difference between Indian Medicine and Allopathic Medicine.He found that Indian System of Medicine was far ahead ofAllopathic Medicine and thereby he returned to India
prematurely.

He was a man of simplicity and humanity. He was called "kairasikaran Mudaliar Vall" Among the distinguished people treated by Dr.MRG were Ramana Maharishi, Md.Ali Jinnah who told that his services were needed at Bombay, E.V.R.Periyar when he was in jail. V.V.Giri, Sri. Rajamanar, H.V.Hande, Thiru. Rajagopalachari, M.S.Subbulakshmi, Raja Sir Muthiah Chettiar, Maj.Gen.Alagappan, the famous Dr.P.S. Warrier and many others.

In 1928the British had created a chair for Therapeutics reserved only for Senior British IMS officers In the following year- Dr.MRG was sent to London as Professor of therapeutics to see the comparative study in the method of study in
Therapeutics in India and England.



Professor Thompson Head of the Department of Therapeutics found that the method of teaching inMadras Medical College was better standard and adopted the same principle in his University in UK.

 After retirement Dr.Guruswamy was appointed as Honorary Director of
Indigenous System ofMedicine from 1937 to June1955 at the School of Indian
Medicine which became a college and a degree course was also instituted and
later became the pesent Kilpauk Medical College.During this period the school had raised to the status of College and many improvements were effected
including institution of Degree course. The villageVaidya scheme and some research schemes were undertaken and encouraged recognition of his service in
this Institution..

Later this Institution came to be ‚Kilpauk Medical College, the Medical Block was named after the doyen as Dr.Guruswamy Mudaliar Block which was opened by the then Chief Minister of Madras State ‚Hon'ble K.Kamaraj
Dr. Guruswamy was a complete Doctor and a Rishi.

He was the friend of the poor.He looked on his profession as a vacation and
made it a mission ofmercy. He was a patriotic, philanthrophist,a Physician and
a pious man.He is an institution in himself as for his poor patients there name was a legion. He was always at the service of the poorest of the poor.

He donated his property for the school -Thondaimandala Thuluva vellala high School to provide Mid Day Meals for the students.It was a Precedence to todays Midday Meal Scheme..

He was the first Doctor to be awarded Doctor of Science by the Madras DSc University in the year  1 9 5 7

He was instrumental to start the Association of Physicians of India and was President of the Association at Madras.

He was also Member of the Legislative Council.
