Schooling & College:
I was born on 3rd September 1947 to Late Dr. Mathuram Santosham and Mrs. Suseela Santosham. My father was a pioneer in surgical treatment of Pulmonary tuberculosis. He started the lung clinic at Egmore, Chennai in 1937 and Santoshapuram T. B Sanatorium in Velachery, Chennai in 1947.

I had my primary schooling in Church of Scotland Mission Bain School from 1951 to 1957 and Madras Christian College High School started by Scottish Missionaries between 1957–1963. From 1963 to 1964 I went to Madras Christian College, Tambaram for my Pre University course. I joined M.B.B.S., in Madras Medical College in 1964 and passed MBBS in 1969. M.S General Surgery in 1974 and M.Ch Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in 1977.

Medical Teacher: 
I joined the teaching faculty of the Madras College and worked as an Assistant Professor from 1976 to 1994 and was promoted as a Professor in 1994. In 2003 I have taken over as the Head of the Department. Every year four students join the M.Ch., Thoracic Surgery Course and they are trained in various Cardio Thoracic Surgical Procedures and regular teaching programmes.

Areas of Interest:-
I have had a passion for General Thoracic Surgery and was the founder President of the Indian Association of Bronchology. I have trained many Surgeons and Pulmonologists and conducted /participated in many workshops in Bronchoscopy.
I have been keenly interested in Tracheal Surgery and had completed 426 cases. On an average I perform one major Thoracic Surgical procedure a day.

Private Practice:-
I am the Chairman and Senior Thoracic Surgeon of the Santosham Chest Hospital founded by my late father and I have two brothers, one is a pulmonary Physician and the other, an Interventional Pulmonary Radiologist. My son, Dr Rajiv Santosham is my partner in my Thoracic Surgical practice, and he has started the VATS lobectomy programme in my practice. I am also a senior consultant in Thoracic Surgery in Apollo Hospital, which is one of the state of the art modern corporate hospitals in India.
